Pdf Download : Plastic & Hand Surgery in Clinical Practice: Classifications and Definitions

Written By share_e on Wednesday, May 11, 2011 | 6:32 AM

Provides an easy reference aid for those involved in the field of Plastic Surgery. Plastic surgery is a large and diverse field and therefore this book would serve as a framework or skeleton on which to base answers to questions relating to the individual components of the topic. It would be useful to students of the specialty in addition to those involved in teaching.

Provides definitions: a particularly helpful way to engage in answering a question.- Provides classifications: neatly distils a large topic into a manageable framework.- Provides references of recognised classifications: a question often asked of trainees on a variety of topics.- Provides simple diagrams: often asked to draw sketches by trainers and patients.- Succinct: removes excessive padding and provides a sound backbone of knowledge without the reader having to painfully extract information from an elaborate text.

Certain chapters of the book would appeal to a range of surgeons not only plastic surgeons but those involved in orthopaedics, hand surgery, urology, maxillofacial and craniofacial specialties. The incorporation of a medicolegal chapter significantly widens readership across the medical specialties and perhaps into the legal sphere. (The author has a degree in Medical Law in addition to Medicine).

Certain chapters would also be of interest to other professions allied to medicine e.g. plastic surgery specialist nurses, occupational therapists, speech therapists with an interest in cleft.

Pdf Download : The Social Psychology of English as a Global Language: Attitudes, Awareness and Identity in the Japanese Context (Educational Linguistics 10)

This ground-breaking work is a detailed account of an innovative and in-depth study of the attitudes of in excess of 500 Japanese learners towards a number of standard and non-standard as well as native and non-native varieties of English speech. The research conducted refines the investigation of learner attitudes by employing a range of pioneering techniques of attitude measurement. These methods are largely incorporated from the strong traditions that exist in the fields of social psychology and second language acquisition and utilize both direct and indirect techniques of attitude measurement. The author locates the findings in the context of the wealth of literature on native speaker evaluations of languages and language varieties.

The study is unique in that the results provide clear evidence of both attitude change and high levels of linguistic awareness among the informants of social and geographical diversity within the English language. These findings are analyzed in detail in relation to the global spread of English as well as in terms of the pedagogical implications for the choice of linguistic model employed in English language classrooms both inside and outside Japan.

The issues examined are of particular interest to educators, researchers and students in the fields of applied linguistics, TESOL, second language acquisition, social psychology of language and sociolinguistics. The pedagogical and language policy implications of the findings obtained make essential reading for those with a specific focus on the role of the English language and English language teaching, both in Japan and beyond.

Pdf Download : Molecular Basis of Health and Disease

Written By share_e on Thursday, May 5, 2011 | 10:57 AM

The book describes how the balance between pro- and anti-inflammatory molecules is related to health and disease. It is suggested that many diseases are initiated and their progress is influenced by inflammatory molecules and a decrease in the production and/or action of anti-inflammatory molecules and this imbalance between pro- and anti-inflammatory molecules seems to have been initiated in the perinatal period. This implies that strategies to prevent and manage various adult diseases should start in the perinatal period.

An alteration in the metaolism of essential fatty acids and their anti-inflammatory molecules such as lipoxins, resolvins, protecitns, maresins and nitrolipids seems to play a major role in the pathobiology of several adult diseases. Based on these concepts, novel therapeutic approaches in the management of insulin resistance, obesity, type 2 diabetes mellitus, metabolic syndrome, cancer, lupus, rheumatoid arthritis and other auto-immune diseases are presented. Based on all these evidences, a unified concept that several adult diseases are due to an alteration in the balance between pro- and anti-inflammatory molecules is discussed and novel methods of their management are presented.
